Unless a couple sign a prenuptial agreement prior to marrage what happens (depending on state laws) is that the assets of both couple's are divided equally between both partners. That can include stocks, bonds, bank assets, custody rights over kids, vehicles who gets to keep the house and so forth. Now if the wife is a stay at home wife and does not have her own assets then yes she can take a guy for half of what he is essentially worth. Although I do know that in my state retirement accounts are protected unless a husband owes allamony.
